Description
Taking inspiration from traditional South African Veldskoen – Vellies boots and Chukkas, we have created the Afrikaans Boot™. Authentic Chukka Vellie footwear has been worn by South African herders and farmers for generations. It is a boot that was designed for the rigor of work in the field, as well as for long journeys on foot, however, the majority of models currently sold in Europe are intended for urban use. At Skaapherder we have redesigned the boot to return it to its natural element: field work and all kinds of outdoor activities. The Goodyear Welted handcrafted construction, together with the most resistant leathers and the Vibram® Montagna soles, provide the greatest versatility and make these boots your best ally in all kinds of adventures: from an African Safari to the Camino de Santiago.
Features
- Authentic 360º Goodyear Welted Construction: the best quality traditional construction available. It allows to change the sole without affecting the rest of the boot. We added a “storm” leather welt to obtain better resistance against external inclemencies.
- Rugged and water resistant thick, oil-tanned, full grain leather. All the leathers we use are of European origin, chrome-free tanning in tanneries rated Gold by the Leather Working Group (LWG), the highest distinction for tanneries with low environmental impact.
- Solid non-removable insole made of 3.8 – 4mm thick vegetable tanned leather that provides great durability and breathability. The insole is covered by a layer of fine leather for better foot comfort. Under the insole, there is a natural cork filler which provides thermal insulation, and combined with the leather insole, it will create a perfect mould of the shape of our foot. Additionally, the insole rests on a hardened wood shank that provides structural support and greater stability.
- The midsole is made up of a 3mm thick layer of veg tan leather to give the boot greater stability and resistance. In addition, we include a layer of EVA rubber of the highest quality in the lower part, so that the final bond with the Vibram® sole is the most resistant possible. The two midsoles are stitched to the welt in the second stitch (Rapid Stitch) that makes up the Goodyear construction, thus everything will stay in place.
- Vibram® Montagna deep-lugged sole made in Italy with a traditional lug design. It provides great grip and resistance. The best for outdoor use.
- This boot is built on the Jacobus last, developed north-western Spain in the 90s to provide the greatest comfort to pilgrims in their way to Santiago de Compostela. For its comfort, we consider it the ideal last for outdoor use and long-distance walking.
- Following the tradition in Chukkas / Vellies, the boot does not have an inner lining, this way we achieve greater versatility while increasing breathability and durability. Additionally, we have reinforced the inside of the heel area with a layer of leather to increase resistance to wear and heel support.
- Three pairs of metal eyelets, according to the norm that specifies two or three eyelets for Chukka / Vellie boots. The area is reinforced with a layer of leather inside.
- We do not use plastic artificial waterproof membranes that break down with wear. Instead, we rely on Goodyear Welt construction and oiled full-grain leather to achieve the perfect natural balance of waterproofing and breathability.

The traditional method of manufacturing the most rugged boots.
- One first interior stitching joins the leather insole, the upper part of the boot and the welt.
- We place a wooden shank and fill the area under the insole with natural granulated cork.
- Under the cork, there is a leather + EVA midsole and everything is joined to the welt by the second exterior stitching (Rapid stitch). Finally, you will find a Vibram® Montagna cemented to de EVA midsole for easy replacement, leaving the rest of the boot intact.
We use rugged oil-tanned leather. However, some maintenance is necessary to extend its durability in the best condition:
- Cleaning: brushing after each outing to remove accumulated dust or mud.
- Conditioning: you must regularly apply nourishing products to the leather to prevent it from drying out and cracking.
- Protection: occasionally, you will apply products to protect the boot and our feet from the outside elements, especially in rainy or snowy conditions. If you want better breathability, you must limit the use of these products.
